Exporting to the European Union: A handbook for Ghanaian women-led businesses in the cosmetics sector
This handbook supports Ghanaian women-led businesses in the cosmetics sector, particularly focusing on those made from shea butter, to export to the European Economic AREA (EEA). It outlines the key legal and regulatory requirements for market entry, offering practical guidance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Topics include product classification, delivery methods, sales contract terms, reduced tariffs, cosmetic claims, responsible person appointment, product notification, safety assessments, good manufacturing practices, packaging, labelling, intellectual property, sustainability, VAT, customs procedures, and transport logistics. A checklist helps businesses prepare for compliance and post-market responsibilities.
This handbook was developed by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and Sidley Austin, in collaboration with the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iceland and the Swiss Confederation.
